FESTIVAL OF FRIENDS / TACOMA, WA
Festival of Friends events are made up of:
- Pre-organized cover song performance collectives showcasing material by iconic bands and artists performed by a rotating cast of musicians over the course of the evening.
- Guitarists, bassists, drummers, keyboardists and vocalists (available instrumentation is material dependent) who've registered in advance for the songs they want to perform on their primary instrument.
- Participating musicians choose a minimum of two and a maximum of four songs each. All participants select from one or more of the highlighted decades based on their playing level, confidence in learning material, vocal range and overall interest in the music.
Festival of Friends events are for:
- Armchair musicians as well as routine players with an intermediate to advanced-level skill set (even if its been a while and you're just looking to kick off the rust).
- Who can learn material on their own and readily apply it in a live event setting. There are no auditions or formalized rehearsals.
- The only requirements for participating musicians is to come to the show ready to perform (i.e., know the songs and your parts to the best of your ability), be respectful to your event bandmates and to have lots of fun!
What are the benefits of participating?
- Simple, convenient and low-pressure way to play in a band and perform live with both new faces and old friends minus the legwork of bringing it together.
- Improve your overall playing through focused, goal-oriented practice time and live performance gigs.
- Try out new musical styles you might otherwise not have considered or had the opportunity to explore.
- Spend less time organizing a band and more time applying your passion and skills.
- Play and perform music minus any long-term commitment above and beyond the event itself.

60's DECADE: Blues-Rock Pioneers
While a lot of early rock & roll was based in the blues, Blues-Rock didn't fully develop into a sub-genre until the late-'60s. Blues-rock emphasized two specific things -- the traditional, three-chord blues song and instrumental improvisation. Borrowing the idea of an instrumental combo and loud amplification from rock & roll, the original blues-rockers -- bands like Cream that grew out of traditional British blues as well as American blues-based bands, also attempted to play long, involved improvisations with countless bands following in the pioneer's footsteps.

70's DECADE: Album Oriented Rock
During the '70s, FM radio stations gradually diluted the freewheeling innovations of pirate radio and early FM stations. Theoretically, the new stations did what the pioneers did -- play album tracks instead of singles -- but they soon relied on a set group of artists for their playlists. The one thing that tied all these Album Rock artists together was their dedication to the album as the vehicle for their music, plus their reliance on rock as the foundation of their material. Across the board it was fairly diverse but they all shared a certain artistic aesthetic and little bit of indulgence, plus their constant exposure on FM radio.

80's DECADE: College Rock Radio
College rock is the (largely) alternative music that dominated college radio playlists in the 1980s. Most college rock was born in the confluence of new wave, post-punk, and early alternative rock and while the pop-centric bands didn't always fit into the mainstream the way new wave did, it was arty and experimental at times but not as detached as many of the post-punk bands during that era. And where much early alternative/American underground rock was rooted in punk and hardcore, many college rock bands grew beyond this to create their own distinctive styles.

90's DECADE: Alternative Pop/Rock
Alternative pop/rock is essentially a catch-all term for post-punk bands from the mid-'80s to the mid-'90s. There is a multitude of musical styles within alternative rock, from the sweet melodies of jangle-pop to the metallic grind of industrial, yet are all tied together by a similar aesthetic -- they all hovered outside of mainstream pop. In some ways, there are two waves of alternative bands, with Nirvana's unprecedented crossover success in 1991 acting as a dividing point, with these songs representing the latter wave.
