LENNY KRAVITZ / GREATEST HITS COMPILATION (2000)
One-man rock and soul revivalist Lenny Kravitz kept traditional pop values alive through much of the 90s. Lenny Kravitz first emerged on the rock scene in 1989 with his debut album, "Let Love Rule," a '60s psychedelic/classic-rock album with heavy Prince and Lennon influences. His greatest gift is that he's a master synthesist, pulling together different sounds and styles from eras past to create a sound that has always inhabited his influences with a genuine spirit that transcends imitation. Since he was an unabashed classicist, his records often suffered the brunt of nasty criticism, but they were often very good, particularly early in his career before he indulged in the mannerisms of guitar-blasting stadium rock. The 2000 Greatest Hits compilation is a terrific encapsulation of Kravitz at the peak of his talents across a range of styles he encompasses.
