CHEAP TRICK

SELECTIONS FROM LIVE "AT BUDOKAN" ALBUM
2026 Calendar

Bandmixers Discography Series / Selections From -

CHEAP TRICK / at BUDOKAN (1978)

Picture
Cheap Trick’s At Budokan era marked the band’s breakthrough to international fame and cemented their reputation as a powerful live act. Recorded during concerts in April 1978 at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, the performances captured the group at a peak moment, fueled by an enthusiastic Japanese fan base that had embraced them earlier than audiences in the United States. Released in 1978 (internationally) and in 1979 in the U.S., Cheap Trick at Budokan showcased the band’s blend of hard rock energy, pop hooks, and humor. Live versions of songs like “I Want You to Want Me,” “Surrender,” and “Hello There” became definitive, with “I Want You to Want Me” turning into a major hit and launching Cheap Trick into mainstream success. The album’s raw sound and crowd interaction highlighted the band’s chemistry and stage presence, transforming them from cult favorites into rock stars. At Budokan remains one of the most iconic live albums in rock history and a defining moment in Cheap Trick’s career.
